Stitching Spotlight: | This design says it is for Linen, but I want to do it on Aida! Can I? | | If the pattern calls for sewing 'over two' on linen, you can get the same size of project by sewing 'over one' on Aida. However, there are some limitations on this change-over. If the pattern for linen calls for 'over one', you would have to sew over a half on Aida - i.e. put the needle through the stands of fabric between the holes instead of through the holes. This is the situation with quarter-stitches, and it can be with back-stitches. Therefore, it is more difficult to do the quarter-stitches and some back-stitches on Aida. It can be done. Many people do it. But, it is up to you if you want to try it. Some designs say that it may not be sewn on Aida, usually because they have very many quarter or over-one stitches.
If the linen was 32 count, you need a 16 count of Aida to get the same size picture. And, 28 count linen or Jobelan needs 14 count Aida. Look for the same color in Aida, if you cannot find it on our website, try to match the 'similar to' DMC color. If you still cannot find something comparable, you may visit the Wichelt Imports website, and ask us to special order a fabric for you (this can get pricey).
If the linen is to be sewn over one, you would have the greatest difficulty in transferring it to Aida, unless you want to sew it over one also, and then the size would come out as twice the original size. See our Glossary for more details! |
| Website Spotlight: | I don't know about using a credit card online. How do I know if a website is secure? First of all, you can never be too careful! But there are some simple things to look for when shopping online.
1. Is the checkout page secure? Secure means that all information you put into the page will be encrypted when it gets sent to the recipient. You can tell if a page is secure by looking at the web address. Secure addresses start with "https" instead of "http". Also, a little golden lock should appear somewhere outside the page; either on your address bar or the bottom bar of your window. Never put payment information in to an un-secure page. Please note that not all of the pages on a site will be secure - but the checkout page must be!
2. Does the site give you a funny feeling? Look for contact information. At minimum there should be a telephone number, address, and email for the business somewhere. Real addresses are more desirable than PO boxes (although PO boxes are not automatically bad). Ask questions!
3. Is there any other way to pay? Any legitimate online business should at least work with customers who don't want to use credit cards. Here at Salt & Pepper, we accept Paypal payments, Swift bank transfers, paper checks, and money orders as well as credit cards. If you don't want to pay by card, Don't! And don't let anyone ever pressure you into using a card if you are not comfortable. (For obvious reasons, we don't recommend mailing cash!) |
